Stories Become Facts?
I ask you who was the post rider that rode more than 300 miles from Watertown Massachusetts to Philadelphia to warn the American colonists of the British attack in 1775?
Paul Revere - right?
No. It was Israel Bissell. What? Who?
OK, so Paul Revere, I'll explain.
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote a poem in an attempt to incite patriotism among the American colonists by writing the legend of Paul Revere. A name much more American, and easier to rhyme, than Israel Bissell.
Yes, Paul Revere rode a horse in Massachusetts. He rode the horse about 20 miles. Not too impressive. But due to a poem - he became a great American hero.
Who wanted to prove to Queen Isabella of Spain the world was round?
Christopher Columbus - right?
No. Most people at the time of Columbus knew the Earth was essentially spherical. If Columbus went to Queen Isabella of Spain and told her he wanted to prove the Earth was round - she would have laughed at him. Aristotle proved the Earth was round 2000 years prior to that.
Washington Irving wrote a book "The Life and Voyages of Christopher Columbus". The myth of Christopher Columbus trying to prove the world was round is based on this book.
